    Handmade Happy Hour is back for February, with a special Sweetheart Edition just in time for Valentine’s Day. Miss Ohio Vintage & Bellestyle present another group of talented indie vendors who will be selling handcrafted and vintage goods ranging from repurposed jewelry to wooden toys. This month's event will take place at Home Wine Kitchen. As always, Handmade Happy Hour is a family friendly event, complete with supervised kids table and a wide variety of products for all age groups. Complimentary wine and hors’ doeurves will be available on a first come basis, beginning at 5pm.

    This month’s vendor lineup features an eclectic array of handmade goods. Bellestyle, Fable & Lore, and Retired Treasures will be selling repurposed and one of a kind jewelry. Clothing and accessories will be available from Miss Ohio Vintage, Bluebird Apparel, and Mockturtle Designs. The Jane Soap, Santa Lucia Ceramics, Suzanne Lay Kids, and HB Handmades are to feature a variety of home goods and children’s items. The Patterned Owl will have a special selection of Valentine’s Day cards and other paper goods.

We're happy to announce another vintage vendor at Handmade Happy Hour! We are hosting our second handmade happy hour at Katie's Pizzeria once again (such an endearing St. Louis venue!). Vintage Baubles & Bits will be peddling old goods next to us - and we can't wait!

Vintage Baubles & Bits started from a hobby. I grew up in rural Ohio in a very poor community and my family always struggled to make ends meet. When I was a teenager, my grandfather gave me a collection of Fenton glassware slippers. For those of you who know the Fenton brand, you'll know that the slippers were the least expensive pieces that were made; but for us, it was collecting something nice, worth treasuring. Since I received the collection I've been adding to it, which started my love of visiting thrift stores, antique malls and resale shops.

While perusing these shops I found more things I liked and never knew existed! My personal collections started to grow. I realized how happy I was when I found these treasures and the wonder that came over me when I researched more about pieces that intrigued me. It was this wonder that lead me to wanting to provide this same feeling for others.

Thus, the birth of Vintage Baubles & Bits, a business focused on bringing all the pretty, girlie, beautiful things of the past a new life.

MOV welcomes WOVEN to the Handmade Holiday Happy Hour

We are excited to welcome WOVEN to our Handmade Holiday Happy Hour.

WOVEN is made up of Refugee women and their families from the country of Burma (known also as the hostile Myanmar) that have been placed in the city of St. Louis after fleeing to escape severe danger and persecution. They wish to carry on the tradition from their villiages by continuing to weave hand-loomed scarves and bags.

Their method is known as Back-strap weaving which is done with various bamboo sticks and wooden instruments that are strategically placed to create a loom. Each item they weave has a unique in pattern and is extremely intricate, involving 2 full days of tedious hand-work on the floor in order to produce just one bag.
As traditional weaving is an important part of the Burmese culture, these refugees hope to share their ancient craft within the St. Louis community. It is through this desire that WOVEN seeks to empower these women with a sense of purpose and meaning in a world that is so new, which will in turn provide additional income for their families.

The Grove Fest Fashion Corner is tomorrow - a team of talented women have been working diligently to design and produce a fun, down-to-earth pop-up shop, runway show, and "VIP" Party - because we are all important people.

MOV is proud to announce its first collection curated by Amanda Humbolt. Her line, Graze, will feature fall casuals fit to layer mix with any wardrobe. Expect earth tones and heavy knits worthy of the most notable street style pros.

Closing our fall runway show will be a short collection curated by me (Linds) and Carson Lewallen and styled with modern pieces to encompass our "vintage for the modern girl" outlook. This finale collection will feature the most elite of local models - the beautiful women who brave the camera on the weekend and return to their noteworthy lives immediately after. Whether a full-time mother, a radio personality, aspiring model, attorney, photographer, or entrepeneur - each of these trendsetters will grace our final outfits with her one-of-a-kind character.

Boombox Betty got it’s start when a dear friend bestowed the name upon the designer, Candy Cederblade, back in the day. Although Boombox Betty itself is somewhat of a new endeavour, Betty has been creating for years.

Betty's "It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll" Collection stems from her fascination with and love for music of all genres. She has always felt a deep connection to music, and believes in the magic it can create. This collection is a reflection of the evolution of her creativity and of music through the ages. Hints of a classical Victorian inspiration intertwine with a mod 60's feel in many of her pieces; glam meets the jazz age in others.

Betty has truly enjoyed watching her ideas multiply and morph over the last several months, and is thrilled to be able to share her latest designs with all of you.

"Felix’s was born in the fall of 2003 featuring delicious homemade food, top shelf martinis, ever-changing art from Saint Louis’s finest artists, and local live music. The character created from the beginning of Felix’s remains alive at Felix’s Pizza Pub today. You may not encounter live music as much, but karaoke on Monday nights has been a big hit! However, don’t be surprised if we sneak in a great band from time to time. One thing that has never changed at Felix’s Pizza Pub is the friendly banter amongst our employees and customers. We provide an atmosphere comfortable for all walks of life…so when you come in, don’t be surprised if you leave with a few new friends. With that in mind, let me tell you how it all began.

Opened by Rob Quiason, who named the restaurant after his father, Felix’s has always been full of great people that reflect the good nature of its original owner. Rob sold the restaurant to Tom Galbraith and myself in September of 2004 and has since opened a successful sandwich shop named after his mother, Nora, just a few doors down from Felix’s Pizza Pub. Tom and I met in first grade and were promptly in the principal’s office five minutes later for talking to each other too much. Like the brother I never had, Tom and I were always up to something that usually led us back to the principal’s office. After 35 years of friendship, we don’t get in trouble as much, but in a lot of ways nothing has really changed. We still can’t stop talkin’ to each other.

Chef Andy Roesch, who worked with us in our early years, re-joined us in 2010 and is now a part owner. We have always wanted to start a New York style pizza place in Dogtown and with Chef Andy’s help Felix’s Restaurant has been transformed into Felix’s Pizza Pub. The crust, which is made in house, is crispy on bottom and a little chewy on top. Our specialty pizzas are made with fresh and flavorful toppings. Neither too thick, nor too thin, it makes for a delicious pie. You can even order it by the slice if you like. We also offer tasty wings, salads, sandwiches and of course, our legendary baby back ribs. Chef Andy has knocked it out of the park.

Owning Felix’s over the years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives.
We have changed concepts many times with our menu and look, but through it all, our customers’ support has been unwavering. With the addition of a second bar in November 2010, and the recent remodeling of our original bar and kitchen, we can’t wait to show off all the hard work that has been put into Felix’s Pizza Pub. Our customers have become our friends and their passion for Felix’s is the biggest compliment we could ever receive. We have some other big ideas around the corner as Felix’s is always growing and evolving. We look forward to sharing them with you.

Just wanted to put it out there that we are NOT located in the Apop Records building anymore! That was our summer pop-up shop, and we will be doing traveling shows, home shows (yes we will come to your house!), fashion shows, and Etsy all starting October 1st with a kick off at our Fall Runway Show, The Grove Fest Fashion Corner! Binge & Purge now resides in Apop Records, so you CAN still find vintage there, but it will be much different! :)

The Grove Fest Fashion Corner will begin at 4 pm on October 1st at Grove Fest (we will be at the intersection of Manchester & Tower Grove)! We are busy preparing for the big day and can't wait to bring you our Pop-Up Shop, Joplin Tag Sale, clothes from the closet of the likes of Jill Manoff of Alive Magainze in our Wardrobe Sale, a very special VIP Party that begins at 6 pm (get your tickets today!) and (phew!) at 7 pm our Fall Runway Show featuring talent local designers and boutiques hits the runway!

Grove Fest Fashion Corner Wardrobe Seller Spotlight: Jessica Sikes, Local Model & Trendsetter!

Jessica Sikes is the quintessential risk taker when it comes to fashion in St. Louis.

Not many dare to don the colorful, over-the-top, and sometimes gaudy ensembles she puts together. Jessica doesn't mind the stares and comments, yet feeds off of it and only hopes that she can inspire mid-westerns to dress a little more outside of the box. (We at Miss Ohio Vintage applaud this!)

The adventurous Jessica frequents vintage and thrift stores, almost on a daily basis, searching out unique and avant garde pieces to play dress up with. She also spends a great deal of time altering her finds on her beloved vintage sewing machine, giving each piece a bit of modern appeal. She believes that what a person wears is a strong non-verbal communicator, and uses fashion as her creative outlet.

Come out to Grove Fest Fashion Corner on October 1st, Jessica will be offering up beautiful, one-of-a-kind vintage and thrifted items from her wardrobe for sale, including bags, boots, dresses, hats and scarves covering decades of fashion.

COLOR BLOCKING! By Andie

If I had to sum up Spring/Summer 2011 runway shows and celebrity trends, I would say color. Bright colors (even neon) have made a huge come back this season and the best way to wear them is color blocking!

Below Emma Stones rocks my favorite color block combo, pink and red. The two warm colors have been known to clash in the past, but are a huge trend this season. The contrasting texture of the shirt and skirt in Stone's outfit make the blocking stand out even more.

Rihanna also opted for the warm color combo. Her peach pants and pink crop top are broken up by exposed waist. Her red hair throws another color into the mix.

Below street style legend Anna Dello Russo wore a pink and bright orange peplum top under a blood orange colored suit. This color blocking would be have been slightly subtle, but she added forest green shoes to complete the look. Ann D NEVER does subtle.

This look below is by Rachel Roy and uses three different colors to make one fabulous outfit. The mint green and blue really pop together, and the purple button down unexpectedly ties the whole outfit together.

The look below is by Nina Ricci. The yellow and pink combo is playful, but with the delicate satin and loosely tailored shaped skirt, it's also mature. I would have even gone a step further and thrown in some blue accents (shoes or a clutch).

Clearly warmer colors are more popular with color blocking, but I say: dare to go dark! A bright blue and green combo could be really fabulous, and you could even mixing warm and cold colors.

The key to color blocking is keeping the outfit unexpected. Make sure to break some old clashing myths with your outfit! Pops of color in accessories (like Ann D's shoes or Rachel Roy's purple button down) take the outfit to the next level. Don't be afraid to try different shades of the same color too!

2 Days until our Body Positive Runway Show! The final fitting was held today at our little Cherokee shop. We met some amazing individuals. We've added two new speakers to the event, and 3 new models. So many of these beautiful men and women are up in arms over victim-blaming, and ready to make a statement by walking the catwalk free of judgement and full of confidence.

We hope to raise awareness about victim blaming. We hope to encourage true acceptance over tolerance. We hope to build confidence in the men and women who experience stereotyping, victim blaming, and unfair judgment every day.

So come help us celebrate our our bodies and lifestyles, no matter what they may be.

Starting off this celebration, Civil Ape will take us through a journey of legit acceptance and outstanding design.

Civil Ape is a new art and design studio located on South Broadway in Soulard. The founders Lenard Blair, Damon Davis, Nanyamka Ewing, and newly appointed member Vincent Toles is a solid group of multi-disciplinary artists and designers who talents go above and the beyond the norm. Each artists calibrates on multiple styles of art, music, media, fashion, video, photography, sculpture, and craft. Were one may lack, one or more members fills the gap thus making Civil Ape a powerful force.

On Thursday June 16th, at Byrd Style Lounge (8117 Maryland Ave. 63105), Miss Ohio Vintage will be releasing their official Summer 2011 collection with a special lookbook from creative fashion photographer Shannon Mary.

Clothing featured in MOV's lookbook will be for sale at the event, along with the entire Summer 2011 collection. The lookbook will be available for purchase via Shannon Mary.

Doors open at 6pm. A $3 suggested donation is requested. 100% of door proceeds and a 50/50 raffle will go to benefit victims of the recent storm in Joplin, Mo. A portion of sales will go to the cause as well, and direct donations will be accepted.

A complimentary open bar and rum tasting will be available courtesy of 85 Lashes Rum, as well as light appetizers and desserts.

MOV loves Joplin

We are pouring our hearts out to Joplin, and all those feeling the storm's effects. Just about every girl that works for MOV (or has at some point) has emailed me wanting to know what we can do to help, and how we can possibly use MOV as an outlet for helping the storm victims.

What we are doing:

Miss Ohio Vintage will be collecting donations on Saturday May 28th, and Sunday May 29th at our city location at 2831 Cherokee Street, in Apop Records. We are taking bedding, clothing, canned goods, nonperishable food items, hygiene items and monetary donations. Our goal is to fill up 3 large boxes with donated items!

Miss Ohio Vintage has a stock of vintage bedding including sheets, quilts, and knitted blankets. We will be donating all of these to Joplin. We are also giving a portion of our backstock to the cause. We hope this will jump start the drive!

A Little Extra:

Crazy Weekend Update!

Sorry for the totally lame post title, but I don't event know how to start... This weekend (Thurs May 5 - Sat May 7) is going to be kind of ridiculous. Starting with Cinco De Mayo and ending with my fave, THE KENTUCKY DERBY! There is no appropriate intro here, just sweet details - get your planner ready (and you may want to schedule extra time for pub tran on some of these.....)

I'm going to start with the biggest, most important event of the weekend first....

FLIPPING THE BYRD! Re-Launch Party

Miss Ohio Vintage is taking over Byrd! Well half of it... the other half is now filled with whole-paycheck-worthy garments from designers like Marni, Missoni, Miu Miu, and lots of others that don't begin with the letter M. This is the official launch party of our Clayton location, and we are so very very excited to be in Byrd Style Lounge. Owner, Julie Stotlar is an angel for inviting us to share a part of her fashion forward boutique. She has done an amazing job bringing a bit of couture to St. Louis. And as of this Friday, all of St. Louis will have access to glorious designer pieces originally priced at 4 digits, at just 3. Plus, you all know MOV has an amazing price point! Onto my favorite annual event...

THE KENTUCKY DERBY PARTY @ THE STABLE!

Sorry for the caps, I'm having quite a bit of trouble controlling my excitement. This party is the kick off to Summer! You get to wear dresses with huge hats and drink whiskey in the middle of the day, while betting on horses with names like "Uncle Mo," "Mucho Macho Man," and "Pants On Fire." How could that not make for a good time...

MOV sponsors the official Best Hat/Best Dressed Contest. Our panel of judges is pretty spectacular this year.. but that's for a future blog post.. tomorrow. Or maybe Wednesday. I guess you'll have to wait and see.

The Derby Party will be held at The Stable from 2pm-5pm. Come early to get a good seat and check out our fantastic array of VINTAGE before the party really starts.

MOV will be open at the Cherokee location on Thursday from 11am-8pm AND Saturday from 11am-8pm! Addicted to COLOR for the first time...

Bright, bold colors are definitely a favorite trend over at MOV right now! All the drool-inducing editorials in MOV's collection of fashion mags have us in awe over brilliant neon hues and contrasting textures from Prada, Balenciaga and the like.

We're especially fond of the look-at-me kicks and spring stoles coming out of those houses...

In honor of our new love affair with color... we encourage you to head over to the new store and add an extra dimension (or two) to your spring wardrobe.

We have over 30 new sandals hitting the shelves this week - ranging from sizes 5.5-9.5! We've also been stocking up on tiny bags, summer scarves, oversized tees, chambray tops for spring, animal jewelry, and sunglasses!

For those of you who prefer neutrals, we strongly suggest beads, jeweled embellishments and mineral tones - like these great silver boots!

I'm also a lover of statement making, yet classically understated pieces like these glass-bead adorned, huarache style sandals.

One last thing we've been searching for like crazy.. hats! We'll be at The Stable's Derby Party once again this year, hosting their Best Hat and Best Dressed contests! The prizes, judges, and mint juleps are all lined up. Now all we need.. a great selection of Derby Hats for those of you that need a little help in the vintage headwear department. We have found about 12 amazing wide-brimmed hats so far, and will be collecting them right up until Derby Day! Keep checking us out for more details.

One last little update.... we've also been collecting a lot of Men's merchandise. We've had quite a few requests for vests, hats, jackets, scarves, shoes, and t-shirts for Men. We're well on our way to a full collection for the boys. We have a fashionable male helping us find key pieces - and he's very fond of fedoras... so check it out when we open!

Friends! We had our first party in the new location and it was amazing. Shawna Stewart (and her boyfriend, Nick Giacalone) invited her closest friends to enjoy an evening of vintage clothing, personal stylists, delicious drinks and makeup. We'd like to thank her here for being such a wonderful guest, making our first soiree at the new place a happy success! Thanks Shawna! And another special thank you to Megan Dugan, who painted up some pretty faces for the guests and staff - Grace Brumley, Corey Grejtak and our manager, for whom we are so grateful, Rachel Parrish. Without these girls, who knows what would have happened.

As for the updates... we're still planning to release our lookbook on the 18th - YAY! Check back for that - it's our best yet! And the models are too adorable.

The store is planned to open by April 1st - unless someone's playing a joke on us. But we're excited to have regular hours! We'll announced the date for the Grand Opening as soon as we've worked out all the kinks and gotten feedback from our loyal customers.

In the mean time, stop by this Friday, March 18th, for the SGC Roundup and make your way into our little shop for some great vintage finds. MOV's merchandise is located in Apop Records at 2831 Cherokee Street. We'll be open from 12-8 that day, so enter through Apop's front door and they will guide you in the right direction!

I've been getting a lot of inquiries as to when our next fashion show will be. Since we have our hands so full with opening the store, and upcoming events, I've yet to commit to anything - but we will definitely be doing a summer show!

Other upcoming events include The Stable's Derby Party in May, where we will be sponsoring the Best Dressed/Best Hat contest. Our panel of judges is pretty awesome... I'm kind of excited. (By kind of I mean soooo much.)

We are also lending a styling hand to a few weddings this Spring and Summer. I've been creating a few wedding themed moodboards to post on the blog.. and I hope you love them all!

(Super) Woman of the Week: Kelly Kankolenski

Onto our second Woman of the Week! I'm really loving these posts already, as it lets me (and you) in on a few secrets behind the peers I already admire and in this case, absolutely adore. This week I'd like to introduce you to the gorgeous, talented, dedicated, all around catch: Kelly Kankolenski. Kelly is a cosmetologist, entrepreneur and um.. perfect role model? I can only hope my potential daughter would be as genuinely down-to-earth, driven, and pure-at-heart.

Kelly's passion for hair and makeup was realized at 19 when a friend taught her to foil hair. Since then, she's learned to cut, color, and style with the best of them. So much so, that she has been sharing her knowledge with others as a National Educator for Paul Mitchell for 4 years. That's 8 years behind the chair and 4 years instructing others at a nod-worthy 27 years old. (Did I already mention drive and dedication?)

A little bit about Kelly:

"I have been lucky enough to call St. Louis home for 25 years of my life. I was raised in O'Fallon, MO, went to Fort Zumwalt West High where I was a cheerleader and also danced for Showstoppers Dance Center from age 6-18. When I was in high school, I would take 2 looks out of a magazine and practice those hair and makeup looks on half of my face and the other on the other half, go upstairs, wash my face, come back and do it all over again. I loved doing hair and makeup even back then. My mom loves telling me stories of when I was younger, how my barbies were not able to be saved because I would cut their hair and color all over them with markers. Apparently my love for the industry was something I was born with :)."

In such a competitive, saturated industry, experience is everything - and Kelly has earned her reputation. I asked Kelly to tell me a bit about her training and early job experience. And once again, I was impressed all around.

"My training has mainly been with Paul Mitchell and their top artists. I have been fortunate enough to work with amazing artists such as, Robert Cromeans, Stephanie Kocielski, Takashi Kitamura, Ira Pope Sage, DJ Muldoon and many more. My idol is Stephanie Kocielski, the Artistic Director for Paul Mitchell and all of the Robert Cromeans Salons. From her limitless creativity to her ability to excite the crowd and inform them as she works on stage, Stephanie is one of the most incredible people I have ever known. Kevyn Aucoin was by far the biggest inspiration to me with makeup. He is so talented, and thanks to his many books, I am still able to learn the magic of his ways. Kevyn worked with EVERY celebrity. His ability to transform people into characters as well as showcase their own beauty has driven me to be able to do the same."

Kelly also let us in on a few of her favorite projects....

"One of my favorite projects that I have had the privilege of working on for the last 3 years, El Monstero: A Pink Floyd Tribute. El Monstero is a St. Louis tradition every year at Christmas time at The Pageant. It has transformed from a one night show (12 years ago) that sold out Mississippi Nights for 800 people. 2010 El Monstero sold out SIX nights at The Pageant for over 9,000 people. I am so proud to do the makeup for the cast (and some crew) of the show.

I also work with HighSpektical{}Photography on photo shoots and events. We specialize in celebrating a healthier version of a model with our Model For A Day Photo Shoots, where you and your friends can have a real professional photo shoot and feel and be treated like a model all day."

"My favorite photo shoots are showcased on my facebook fan page (Kelly at Kolors Salon). I enjoy working with people who have the same work ethic as myself, and Meg Huth of HighSpektical{}Photography has just that. We have worked together on many shoots, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the one we did at The Mad Art Gallery. We had 6 models, each portraying a different character, the backdrop was an old jail cell that is still showcased at Mad Art. We also had a photo booth as a backdrop, and it added just that little something extra that the shoot needed. I am still very proud of these images, and cannot wait for the next shoot!

HSP also throws theme parties throughout the year, at which I do hair and makeup/face painting. In 2010, my favorite was Party Like an Alien, Man, Party at the Sci-Fi Lounge. This party was full of great people, hair art and face painting, costume contests and much more!"

What inspires Kelly?

"I find inspiration everywhere, from the trees to magazines... I look at color and how light affects color. I love seeing the depth in color as well, in case you are in a situation where you need to create that light with makeup I am prepared. I also love practicing my craft, whether that be on canvas, in a sketch book, or on my friends."

And lastly, there's no motivation like public knowledge of one's endeavors... so I give Kelly extra points for sharing her goals with all of you. Some of her plans for the future include:

"HighSkeptical{}Studios--

Opening a studio, that will be mainly for photo shoots, but will have a salon set up so hair and makeup can be done in the studio. I will also perform there during the week behind the chair. We have a lot of plans not only to showcase our talents and provide our services, but also give back to the community in many ways. Our philanthropy will include things like: community service projects to clean up the city, internships from local colleges helping students grow their portfolios and knowledge, networking events with other local businesses to help grow the community and strengthen our city. We want to help make St. Louis a more beautiful, happy place to live and start a movement of young people moving back to the city."

Woman of the Week #1: (The) Kathryn Moore

Hey friends! Posting a normal post and not an update feels AWESOME. And it's a new thing for MOV. Weekly, we'll be featuring one of the creative St. Louis women we're stalking. These girls are so worthy of the spotlight I feel honored that they even allowed me to write about them on my little blog. As far as the WHO goes... we're only featuring women that truly stand out... like the entrepreneurial twenty-somethings that built their reputation from ground up with only pure talent and elbow grease. And don't get me wrong, there are a lot of spotlight-worthy creative men in St. Louis as well... and I'm sure we'll see a Man-of-the-Week here and there... but I like girly things. And these women are cute and funny and smart and driven... and I want to write about them all the time.

Okay sorry... enough of that.. onto the beautiful MOVWOTW Number One!

The dearest, most gorgeous in every way, ever so talented Kathryn Moore! Thank you so much for agreeing to let me feature you on MOV. If our readers are even half as entertained by your photography and lifestyle as we are, they will be completely and utterly inspired by you.

I know I'm gushing, but I'm really excited to write about this girl! Kathryn is a 24 year old photographer from the St. Louis metro area. She is beautiful, obviously, and radiates the most glorious positive energy. When she's not taking photos or gracing the public with her good vibes and great looks, she's probably playing guitar with her mum or watching anime. I could tell you about her, and trust me I'd love to, but it would involve way too many emoticons, exclamation points and little heart things, which is totally not my style... so read what Kathryn had to say about her love for all things happy and good as I bombarded her with questions.

When did you get your first camera?

I used to buy disposable cameras when I was in elementary school! I went through about two a week, then I realized my mom had a camera, haha. I dabbled with her point and shoot until I took my first photography class in High School. I absolutely fell in love with the dark room. Using the dark room is an absolute necessity for any photographer, film or digital.

When did you discover your interest in photography?

I started taking photos of my friends in middle school. I would do their make up and take their portrait. It made me realize that I love to show people how I see them. Being able to reveal to someone how they look in your eyes is an amazing privilege.

What has been your favorite photo shoot so far and why?

I definitely can't pick a favorite! Every shoot I've ever done has been it's own adventure. I will say, that I absolutely love to shoot photos of my client Erin Marie Hogan! She is an actress living in LA and she is always willing to do outrageous things to make a fantastic photo. One particular shoot she was wearing a white dress and I asked her to lay down in the dirt! She didn't even think twice and was on the ground white dress and all. We got some amazing photos that day!

What's your favorite thing to photograph, or what type of shoot/model? \

I love to shoot photos of people who are willing to step outside their box. I have found that the best ideas aren't premeditated, they unfold during the creative process.

What else are you into? What are your hobbies, your profession, and/or your career goals?

Oh man, I am such a nerd! I am absolutely in love with anime. My current obsession is called Fullmetal Alchemist. I am also a HUGE Harry Potter fan! My iphone's name is Harry iPotter haha. As for my not-so-nerdy hobbies, I love to paint, play guitar, and sing. My Mom is a music teacher and shared with me her love of classical music, opera, and musical theater. My favorite musical is West Side Story, it is absolutely brilliant. My hope is to someday take photos for a magazine that showcases fashion as well as culture.

Who is your favorite photographer?

I love and respect so many photographers, but I would have to say my favorite is Dorothea Lange. Her work capturing the sorrow of the Great Depression is astounding. She not only proved to be a phenomenal talent, but also a fiercely independent female figure. She photographed real human conditions and lived, in her words, "a visual life."

Who are your favorite professional models right now?

I've only really been following Shu Pei. She is absolutely stunning. She is the second asian model to sign a major cosmetics contract in the US, and she's only 20 so I'm excited to see what is next for her.

What designers are you into at the moment?

I've always been a huge fan of Dolce&Gabbana. I love how they are able to create timeless pieces while still being edgy.

Brick-and-Mortar

Hello Readers! It's been a while...

Winter hiatus has been so good to me, but I'm ready to get back into the swing of things. Working full time and managing two blogs, an online store, and everything that comes along with MOV can be a little overwhelming at times, but new opportunities are looking like a light at the end of the tunnel. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we've selected a brick-and-mortar location. We're shooting there this weekend and will be releasing all the info ASAP!

And just so you don't think I'm completely bluffing - we're looking to open the last weekend of February in honor of MOV's 1 year anniversary! Upon our opening we'll be in full effect, posting shoots, blog entries, and inventory updates a few times a week.

Our Grand Opening should be the party of the year... mainly because it's only February, but I expect to see all the regular faces there anyway!

You're going to love all of our new merchandise and our killer staff. Plus we're sharing our storefront with a very special (and generous!) clothing company that I already know you all love....

Friends! It's been so long... Sorry for the neglect on my part. As mentioned in previous posts, I took a job in retail management with hopes of working my way into the marketing department of a great St. Louis company... which made the holiday season EXTRA crazy for me! We said on facebook that we'd be going on a brief pseudo-hiatus for the month of December... and January is almost here!

What can you expect in 2011?

Well... for starters - our new store! We will be releasing information very very soon, within a few weeks even. A Grand Opening and friends and family event will be held for all! I'm also purging a TON of old stock for $1-5, so you'll definitely have to make it out to that sale.

In February we'll be ONE year old! Happy Birthday to us! Expect a party of some sort, or at the very least a killer photoshoot and some mega-sales. Maybe even birthday presents to all of our loyal shoppers!

Jumping back a bit, I'm art directing the promotional shoot for Destination Design. I am SO excited! Kristie really has a unique vision for the shoot so I'm thrilled to have been chosen to help her make it work. Thanks to every last one of you MOV-wearing fashionistas, our little company has started to warrant some attention. We work 24/7 to get our paws on every fancy pants piece of one-of-a-kind vintage clothing we can find... and we have over 100 pieces that haven't even been released.

LOUFEST, St. Louis' new music festival that claims to be the "next SXSW" and is expecting over 15,000 attendees in its first year released their Vendor Village/Retail Scene lineup last week. Check out MISS OHIO VINTAGE in the list! It's going to be an epic weekend, and MOV is even sponsoring BOTH After Parties. We have been in Chicago ALL weekend selling ALL of our summer merchandise at Vintage Heaven to make way for fall! We miss St. Louis but had a total blast in the windy city!

It was hot but the people and the sangria helped us get through! One of our friends we met, pictured here, you should defintiley check out. She is nice. She has a cat. She makes cute stuff. Shikama Jewelry is what its called. Love it!

Miss Ohio Casting Call & AFTER PARTY!

I hope everyone enjoyed some good Fourth of July festivities over the weekend! I took part in a relaxing girls' night with artist Amanda Diane and knitter Kirsten Knight of Knits All Knight - a shopping trip and early dinner followed up by a few bottles of red wine and a lot of girl talk and dress up. On Sunday I went out for some great Greek food at Olympia with my boyfriend before watching Funny People and Men Who Stare at Goats while drinking some Schlafly Hefewiezen and Summer Kolsch. Not too much thrifting took place, as most thrift stores were closed (my favorite one closed PERMANENTLY - bummer!) and estate sales were few and far between., but I did find two awesome dresses and an amazing pair of flats - all for the store. We missed fireworks, but late Sunday night we could see some right from our couch on the second story. Perfect ending to a great holiday weekend.

I'd love to hear what everyone else did, so feel free to leave comments! But I also hope you're not all too worn out to make it to our Casting Call AFTER PARTY on Tuesday at The Wood. We've got a great night planned with many special guests.

Starting at 6pm, MOV will be holding a casting call for models, actors, DJs, musicians, photographers, videographers, makeup artists, hair stylists and set assistants. We will be creating a staff list for events coming up in August, September, October, November AND December. Our busy schedule makes us so happy, but often we need a little more help. If you'd like to help with ANY of our events, be sure to make it out and introduce yourself. Outside of just MOV work, it should be a great networking event for all those in the entertainment industry.

At 6:30 we'll start serving free beer, sangria and pizza for MOV applicants and ALL of their friends! EVERYONE is welcome to come out, mingle and enjoy some complimentary drinks and appetizers.

MOV has also invited a few friends to join the event. Meet Kirsten of Knits All Knight and artist Amanda Diane, who will both have booths set up at the party.

Miss Ohio model and staff member, Carey Llufrio, will be donating her photography talents with a fun photo booth. DJ Trash Talk, aka MOV lead model Brittany Browers, will be providing the music, joined by host and amazing personality Lynn Zimmers.

Lynn, Brittany and Kirsten are hosting a high-kick contest, while MOV will be sponsoring a Best Dressed award - complete with amazing prizes!

We will also be giving away raffle prizes at the after party, which starts at 8pm. Sponsored by Belevedere Pink Grapefruit Vodka, we'll be dancing all night to great music and complimentary cocktails. I don't think it could get much better.

Of course we'll have a booth set up as well, showing off some of our cutest dresses and most darling accessories. I hope to see a ton of familiar faces! RSVP to MissOhioVintage@gmail.com, or just show up and surprise us. ;)

Busy MOV

I've been so busy with MOV the past couple months, I've hardly had time to pay attention to detail... but this week I managed to set some time aside to catch up. With multiple events coming up (including our July 6 Casting Call/Party and our August 14 Runway Show) it's been difficult to stay focused, but I couldn't be having more fun working this much!

In the past few days I altered the cutest dress - courtesy of Amanda Nutter, planned a custom repurposed jewelry collection with Mandi at My Lovies (and 50% of proceeds will be donated to Autism Speaks!), and pick up a consulting gig at an estate sale full of vintage treats. Of course as MOV expands, so does our staff and I think an introduction is overdue... hopefully I can untangle all these ideas and reiterate them into something readable.

The Alteration

This dress, from the closet of Amanda Nutter, is covered with adorable tiny birds and was all but begging for a change. So much so that a couple hems and seams had already been released by the time I received the piece. With transition in mind, I decided to leave the beautiful sleeves intact, and instead altered the current neckline to create a nearly-off-the-shoulder appeal. I hemmed the dress to an almost-too-short length that compliments sandals and boots equally.

The Dress: Pre-final seams... Temporary hem and an open seam on the neckline.

Once I'd shortened the dress with a temporary hemline, I went back over it to clean it up and then got rid of the access fabric. Before I'd even closed off the neckline, I called our lead model Lynn Zimmers to try it on and come it off.

We got a little distracted by some interesting dumpster finds nearby...

Now that the dress is finished, I just have to convince myself to part with it ..... on Etsy soon!

My Lovies + Miss Ohio

You should remember My Lovies from a vendor spotlight pre-Not Your Grandma's Craft Fair in May. Mandi of My Lovies took up jewelry making seriously in the last year and has been impressively successful. From frequent Etsy sales to being the best seller at many indie craft shows in St. Louis, she's absolutely found her niche.

Her wonderful ability and creativity seemed a perfect compliment to my abundance of vintage jewelry, and of course my habit to never stop taking on new projects - a collaboration was in order. Of course we couldn't stop at two to a collaboration - so we've decided to donate the majority of proceeds to Autism Speaks.

After a few online meetings, and a donation of jewelry from MOV and a lot of time and work from My Lovies, creation has begun..... You will start seeing the first collaborative pieces within the next few weeks. Check back to find out what boutiques are carrying the pieces and for more information on custom orders and reservations. All information, including the name and blog ;), will be released soon!

The Staff

Not being able to keep up with your business can be a little intimidating, but we can't complain. After signing on for several upcoming events (that we can't WAIT to release!) MOV decided a staff expansion was in order... MOV now has four full time members, two part time girls and we are endorsing one gorgeous DJ/Model!
